The Next Destination: Gurdaspur, Punjab

I woke up at 0130 hours in the morning. It was still dark, street lights illuminating the roads. Somehow, I managed to come out of my quilt. My bags were pack for the next trip. By 0200 hours, I left my apartment. We had already arranged transport for ourselves.

We started at 0400 hours to our next destination. The next destination was Gurdaspur, Punjab. As I was sleepy, I closed my eyes for a while and felt asleep while the vehicle was moving through the streets, villages, mountains and jungle. When I opened my eyes, I was in Chandigarh. I had been here about twenty two years back. I love this city, but fortunately I was moving towards a different destination.

After twelve hours of drive, we reached Gurdaspur. We had already booked guest room for ourselves. We were tired but still willing to go out and explore the city. Gurdaspur is a place of canals, where irrigation canals passes by. Nothing much to see, but it is famous due to the battle fought between India and Pakistan. We tried local cuisine’s and dived into bed.

Dera Baba Nanak, Tibri, Punjab

Next morning, we moved to Dera Baba Nanak. It is located exactly on the international border between India and Pakistan. This is also holy place for Sikhs. A gurudwaras is located here, surrounded by farms. We were fortunate enough to spot few Pakistanis farming just across the international border. Also, Pakistani Ranger’s observation post was also visible.

One, white flag was indicating the international border. Sialkot is nearby Pakistani city from the international border. It was exciting to see border security force’s troops ensuring the security of the border.

My short visit of Gurdaspur ends by seeing the sunset across the border. I wondered, just a fence was differentiating people of two countries.

The Battle of Longewala

After drifting for approximately thousand kilometers from Alwar, I have reached Longewala. This place romanticizes me allot. The battle of Longewala a legend in itself. It is located at 120 kms from city of Jaisalmer. Only way to reach this place is boulevard and if you are tourist then you have to hire a cab. Longewala is prevalent because of the illustrious skirmish tussled between India and Pakistan in 1971. The clash of Longewala is all about how hundred odd men clogged and overwhelmed approximately 2000 Pakistani legionnaires. This battle was all about the audacity, impetus, chauvinism and drive to prizefight exhibited by those eighty Indian warriors. This scuffle is one of my favorite scuffles, and whenever I come to this place, my mind start envisaging how horde of men repudiated the destiny. During the Indo-Pak war of 1971, A-Coy of 23 Punjab had taken up the defences at Longewala. The A-Coy company commander was Major Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri later on emer...
