To form mechanic’s grip properly follows these steps:
Hold the deck of cards in your hand such that your palm is facing up.
Take your index finger and move it towards the side which is facing away from you.
Position your middle finger, index finger and pinkie finger on side of the deck.
Now, your thumb will hold the deck collectively on the opposite side of rest of the fingers.

This kind of grip makes it difficult for spectator to see what you are doing. This grip helps you in many tricks such as peeking and many more deck card tricks.
