Guidebook of Pharmacy Technician Courses


There are several responsibilities of pharmacy technicians but the major responsibility is to aid licensed pharmacists in filling up the requests in form of prescriptions. These requests generally come from nurses, various hospitals, and doctors and even from the patients. The task of filling up the prescription requests involves retrieval of prescription orders, counting of prescription orders, measuring and weighing it, pouring and mixing the medications. After this pharmacy technicians need to select prescription containers which are perfect for the prescribed medication. After selecting prescription containers, they need to create prescription labels for each type of medication.



Other than providing aid in filling up of prescriptions, a good pharmacy technician also assist in the regular operations of the pharmacy which may also include functions which are not related to medication or pharmacy. For example, pharmacy technician need to assist in preparation of insurance claim forms, maintenance of files such as cash register, and attending calls.

As there are so many functions need to perform by a pharmacy technicians it is logical to be properly trained for this kind of job. Those who are aspiring to be pharmacy technicians need to enrol themselves in a pharmacy technician training program and have to complete it successfully. There are various schools that offer degrees of associate level in pharmacy technician, and there are also various certification courses and diplomas for graduates who aspires to be pharmacy technician.  Some pharmaceutical companies offer on job training which is highly beneficial for the aspiring candidate. The training sessions involves practical experiences combined with classroom lectures which teach techniques and professional skills related with this job. There are lot of study material available online which is helpful for the students. The course structure includes classroom lectures, practical assignments in the field of pharmaceuticals and medical terminology, pharmaceutical mathematics, record keeping techniques, and ethical laws of pharmaceutical industry. This course structure teaches fundamental skills which is needed for the job of pharmaceutical technician. These courses take less than 365 days to complete. The minimum qualification required is diploma of high school. A degree program is longer than the certification program which prepares graduates for the exam of certification. A degree program is of two years and provides detailed scope of training in the pharmaceutical as well as medical discipline which is combined with practice of pharmacy.

Pharmacy technicians doesn't have limited scope, it is a myth that they are confined up to pharmacies. There is huge requirement of pharmacy technicians in hospitals, medical cares, medicine store, health store, personal care shops, various nursing houses, and provides aid in living facilities. Profession of pharmacy technician is best suited for self-starters and self-motivated people those have good command over science and mathematics. It also requires marketing and sales skills as pharmacy is related to retail business and pharmacy technicians need to interact with the consumers for the whole day. As this profession is related to health care, a pharmacy technician should be very flexible with the working hours which also include holidays.
