There are several responsibilities of pharmacy technicians but the major responsibility is to aid licensed pharmacists in filling up the requests in form of prescriptions. These requests generally come from nurses, various hospitals, and doctors and even from the patients. The task of filling up the prescription requests involves retrieval of prescription orders, counting of prescription orders, measuring and weighing it, pouring and mixing the medications. After this pharmacy technicians need to select prescription containers which are perfect for the prescribed medication. After selecting prescription containers, they need to create prescription labels for each type of medication.
Other than providing aid in filling up of prescriptions, a good pharmacy technician also assist in the regular operations of the pharmacy which may also include functions which are not related to medication or pharmacy. For example, pharmacy technician need to assist in preparation of insurance claim forms, maintenance of files such as cash register, and attending calls.

The minimum qualification required is diploma of high school. A degree program is longer than the certification program which prepares graduates for the exam of certification. Pharmacy technicians doesn't have limited scope, it is a myth that they are confined up to pharmacies. Profession of pharmacy technician is best suited for self-starters and self-motivated people those have good command over science and mathematics.
