When for the first time I entered the real desert of Thar,
driver of the truck in which I had taken the lift, informed me that small settlements
at which I was staring are dhani. After informing me, he focused on driving but
I was still in bewilderment that what it means. What is a dhani? Out of
nosiness I questioned the truck driver, he told me that dhani is just a small
settlement of clans of Thar.
These clans are amazing. Less than five families stays in a
dhani. Their homes are made up of wild bushes and mud. As in this expanse less
than hundred centimeters of deluge fall is witnessed annually, these houses are
not at the peril of getting washed away. To my surprise, when I intermingled
with the people of couple of dhani, I came to know that they are not deprived,
they all are millionaires. Each family has more than five hundreds of cattle and
they take out milk and supply it to the city of Jaisalmer. Farfetched fact is
that their living standards doesn’t project the mammon they possess.
These dhanis are not located near to any green patch of
ground or water points but all of them are located below the sand dunes in a
barren land. You will not find any of the trees near to these dhani. I know it
must be hitting your mind too, that why they are not located near to greenery
but in a barren land where one will prefer death rather than living. The
fundamental reason is that in case of any thundering, if these people will live
near trees then it is a huge risk to fall prey to the rain god.
After seeing these people, I realized one thing that humans
can live anywhere because they have the biggest power; the power to adapt even
in hell.
